Limited Special Edition

CARRERA

Discover our new watch band edition, made from the interior leather of a 1977 Porsche 911 Carrera.

Carrera! Seven particularly desirable letters, especially when they grace the rear of a 911. This designation has stood for particularly sporty versions of Porsche models since the 1950s.

In 1977, a vehicle bearing the Carrera insignia beneath its grille left the Zuffenhausen factory: A 911 Carrera 3.0 with a black leather interior.

Fast forward about 45 years, and this vehicle is still cruising on German roads. At the same time, its interior leather experiences a renaissance: in the form of BandWerk's new special edition Carrera.

Etymology

The Term »Carrera«

"Carrera" – a word that, to many, sounds like the roar of an engine, originates from Spanish and translates as "race" – and for Porsche, it wasn't just any race.

It's the Carrera Panamericana, a Mexican road race of the golden 1950s. Not only did Porsche participate, but they also made history.

In 1954, Hans Herrmann sped through Mexican tracks in a Porsche 550 Spyder, securing a breathtaking third place overall, just behind two 4.5-liter Ferraris, despite his 1.5-liter engine. This success not only gave Porsche a class victory but also established the term "Carrera" as a synonym for high performance and sportiness in the Porsche world.

Design

The Strap

The design inspiration for the new special edition Carrera came from a 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera in the color "Glacier Blue", discovered by a member of our design team at the Fuori Concorso on Lake Como.

The fine, bluish thread sewn along the strap edges and the light blue inner leather that appears through the sporty strap perforation, are reminiscent of the car's bright, metallic blue paint job.

A rare species

The Carrera 3.0

In 1976, the Carrera 3.0 took center stage – often simply referred to as the "Carrera 3". This model never made it across the Atlantic to the USA because it couldn't meet strict North American emission standards. The result? Between 1976 and 1977, only 3,687 of these exclusive cars were manufactured. Compare this with the Porsche 911 SC, which many consider the successor to the Carrera 3.0: over 58,000 units roared out of the Zuffenhausen factory. A striking difference that only makes the Carrera 3.0 even more coveted!

Nachhaltige Ressourcen

The magical 3-liter mark

In the shadow of the 911 Turbo?

At first glance, it seemed that the highlight, compared to its older sibling the Carrera 2.7, was simply the three-liter engine. In essence, it was the same heart as the simultaneously introduced 911 Turbo (Type 930) – just without the turbocharger kick. Critics hastily labeled it as "Carrera 2.7 RS light."

Such a rapid devaluation did it an injustice! Granted, its performance figures were close to its predecessor's. But the way this Carrera flexed its muscles was unparalleled. Instead of just filling the gap left by the missing turbo drive of the 930, Porsche stoked the engine's inner fire: The compression ratio was increased, catapulting the three-liter Carrera to an impressive 200 hp and torque of 255 Nm. This particular torque value granted it legendary status in the naturally aspirated engine world.
